This program is specially designed to meet the needs of Energy Sector drivers. This blended training program is designed for companies and drivers who want to balance comprehensive training and hands-on experience with budget demands.
Students will:
- Complete the mandatory prerequisite, Online Defensive Driving – Condensed Version, to learn the latest Defensive Driving theory.
- Participate in a 2-hour practical, hands-on, in-vehicle training session that reinforces safe driving habits and skills, including one-on-one driving time in FSI’s specially designed Skid Vehicle.
Location: This in-vehicle training takes place in Calgary, Alberta.
Vehicle requirement: Learners must supply their own vehicle for the practical training component—typically, this will be their company vehicle. Training in the vehicle they drive for work helps make the experience practical and directly applicable to their daily driving. As training takes place on a gravel track, an SUV or truck is recommended.
Prerequisite: Upon registration and payment, registrants will automatically receive a licence for the online training. The online training must be completed before the scheduled in-vehicle training session.
Student requirements: To attend this class, learners must bring:
- A valid driver’s licence (original card only; copies and photos are not accepted)
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses, if required for driving
- Valid vehicle registration and insurance for the commercial vehicle being used
- Proper driving footwear (no flip-flops, sandals, or heels)

Syllabus
Part 1 of Training: Online Defensive Driving Course – Condensed
This mandatory 3-hour prerequisite training explores the components of the SAFER System of defensive driving: Space, Attitude, Foresight, Eyesight, and Responsibility. This program was developed for drivers in Canada by Dr. Randy Flemmer who has over 30 years of driver education and fleet safety experience. Key topics include:
- Driver competency model
- SAFER system of defensive driving
- Fatigue
- Complacency
- Wildlife collisions
- Most common collisions
- Following too close
- Backing
- Intersections
- Advanced driving
- Ditch entry and recovery

- Emergency braking
- Skid control

This online training must be completed prior to the scheduled in-vehicle training session, or the session will be rescheduled.
Part 2 of Training: Mentally Active Driving Course
This 2-hour in vehicle -driving program is specially designed to meet the needs of corporations that have employees driving as part of their job description. Most of this training is done in the learner's own vehicle, an SUV or truck is recommended as the track is gravel. In this training, students will practice:
- Pre and Post-Trip Inspections
- General Driving Evaluation
- Commentary Driving
- Gravel Road Skill Building
- Braking on gravel
- Steering on gravel
- Swerving on gravel
- Cornering on gravel
- Skid Control Collision
- Avoidance Braking (Progressive squeeze and Anti-lock)
- Backing
- Slalom Driving
- Brake and Avoid
